Lead Paint Question
« on: February 04, 2007, 04:02:30 PM »
During a home inspection of a particular property I have been asked to paint, the home inspector found traces of lead on the trim work.  It appears that it has not been disturbed meaning no paint peeling or chipping off.  Can this be painted over or does it have to be removed according to the lead paint laws?  If it can be painted over, what kind of paint would you suggest?

Thanks.

Wash it thoroughly and paint with a quality 100% acrylic latex paint.
Dump the wash and rinse solution down a sanitary drain.

I don't know how the laws in your state work but here in Washington if you know the place is lead before starting work and don't handle it within the letter of the law you are in big trouble.  If somebody tells me their house has lead paint on it I wouldn't be caught dead with a scraper anywhere near it here in Washington.

If it really is sound you can paint over it.

Same deal here in CA.  Anyone (even the homeowner here) who remediates lead paint without a license is subject to huge fines and potential jail time.

Better check your local laws before proceeding!

Thanks to everyone for their input regarding the lead paint issue.  I think I will steer clear of that job.     :o
