Painting a 6-panel door
« on: March 23, 2008, 12:04:56 PM »
On another forum a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, there took place a discussion on painting 6-panel doors. Someone posted a video they found on youtube of some guy brushing out a door. Most trashed his technique, and while I admit it was slow and painful to watch, I generally go along the lines of thought that if it looks good when he's done, and he got paid a fair amount for his time, so be it. Shortly after, I opened my mouth and mentioned I take a lot of pictures on my job sites, why not shoot some video? So the next opportunity I got, I shot myself painting a 6-panel door. I posted it, and told everyone to let me have it.

The results were surprising. I was pretty amazed myself at the time it took to do. So, here it is, let me have it:

After I posted the first video (which was referred to as 'paint porn'  ;D), several people asked me what was the paint, the brush, the roller, etc. So I filmed this on day 2 for explanation.

And last of all, the second coat. Did it take me as long as it did for the first coat, or same, or shorter? See for yourself:

And no, I'm not just trying to spam my videos, I thought this is something most of us do everyday, and would spawn some interesting conversation.

A vid is worth a thousand wurds!

Because a 6 pain'er is putsy to begin with, I just brush.  Takes about the same time, a bit more control. Those are metal, not wood?  Wood ones have more distinct panels, and can be really brushed individually quite easily. The metal ones are a bit harder.

Nice addition to the collection here !

So do you brush all 6 panel doors?  I've never had issues after spraying them.  Only time I don't spray them is when I can't spray them for one reason or another.

Same for me, but I have had a few times when I have had good weather with calm winds and have sprayed them outside.

PWG,

Thanks for the demo. I painted 6 that way in the shop today. Works great, especially in the horizontal postion. I was always comfortable finishing one side in 30 minutes. Today I averaged 16 minutes each.

Paint: Pro Classic Semi Gloss
Roller Cover: Wooster 3/8" Classic 4"
Brush: Corona Chinex

I'm going to turn the crew loose on this technique.

Thanks.

Michael

How did you try to call me? Is my number posted somewhere?

And yes, regardless if its wood or steel, oil or latex, this is how I paint a door.

Ditto. Actually, I just plain never spray. I recently sold my old Binks Super-Bee airless. It had sat idle in my shop for years collecting dust and getting in my way. Maybe I'm old-skool, but I like the hand-done finish. If done right, you can't tell the difference between sprayed or brushed.

Good Vid... looks like the traditional painting sequence... with a roller added...  ;)  also your dividing the (door) work into two sections is a good idea with quick setting acrylic paints....
