Man, I'm not calling YOU slow...I'm just making a general argument for the OTHER side of this issue. Besides, I was being sarcastic to a point.  But really, since whenever I started reading painter forums on the internet, it's the same sad tale I read about illegals and we do have this problem in the painting industry that nobody admits.  We charge more and we are slower and we don't teach production like we used to.  Admit it!

Carl, I can only speak for myself...
I cut, roll and spray faster than almost every painter I know...
I move quick, in every aspect of my job.
My attitude is: If Im not covered in sweat, Im not really working!

Personally... I know I kick ass, in terms of the time I spend on a job. (as does Jake)
and I will be the last person to complain about long hours and hard work.

I agree that some painters milk a job, and can be lazy. I know, because I have fired many of them.

However, I dont work for an hourly wage. I kick ass because the faster I paint, the more profit I make per job... and the sooner I am on to the next one. (although quality NEVER takes a back seat to speed)

Ive never thought about a paint job being some sort of percentage of the cost of the home...
I look at every job the same... How hard is it? How much time will it take? And how much am I going to spend in materials?

In my opinion, a "master" painter, is worth every bit of $25.00 to $50.00 per hour... depending on the job and the level of difficulty or hazard.

And... going back to the job that this post is originally about...
I refuse to climb a 28 ft ladder hundreds of times a day, in 110 degree heat for anything less than a fair wage.. and for me, that wage would be about $30.00 and hour.

one way to avoid all the running around doing estimates is to ask
upfront what the guys budget is for the project.  As you
can see my motto is "know the serious from the curious".

You can get your prospect to describe the job over the phone,
and ask what he had in mind for a budget. This would of
saved your time which you could of used doing another job
when you found out he was only willing to pay $800.00

Ask him for a price range and then you can fit the work you are willing
to do for that amount into the price he gave you.  Also ask how
he came up with that amount of his budget

Generaly we do ask open ended questions during the first engagement with the prospectus on the phone.

Sometimes however, when the client is (as in this case) appearently in a hurry and is rushing the conversation, well.... Sometimes ya just gotta go in blind.

We HAVE been doing this for awhile. :)

Cheers!

Also, just to once again make clear... Our $3,500 bid was just for the soffits...

Not the whole house, which again, we would have bid around 9 grand.

Cheers everybody!

About your last line, I do Admit it!...you are right! (but not really the slower part. but that's the problem! the quailty in  our work isn't the same anymore because we have to compete)
I checked your profile and seen you are from my neck of the woods. I could tell my angers here about the illegals but I would get banned. I bet we know a few of the same painters from the Elmhurst area which was the painting melting pot when I broke in 1989. I am 37
I'm sending you a PM.

My sales staff is not permitted to go on a call unless:

Will the buyer be present?
What is the budget?
How are they paying?
When do they need the job complete?
How did you hear about us?

and

Do you have other quotes for this work? If so, are you comparing quotes or unhappy with the price?
Have you made a tentative decision or decided against all other quotes?

People in general will abuse your FREE estimate offers.

We charge for estimates! Yes, we charge! I have better things to do than waste time and fuel.

In the Auto Detail business, it's a menu. Choose what you want to pay for! Nice!
