How can we get a Busier forum?
« on: October 28, 2008, 10:59:02 AM »
I really like this site a lot better than some of the other forums I've visited, people are friendly and helpful here, unlike some others I've seen. I wish it was a little more active. Any ideas how we can get more participation here? Contests? A cool T shirt or something? Free Beer?  ;D

This place is good because of the quality, not quantity. A person with a particular issue would do well to use the search feature, because so many things have been talked about before.
For hanging out and chit chat, I use other forums.

I use the search feature a lot, but even so it's always nice to get a new perspective from a different person which may not have posted to the original thread. I'm all about quality over quantity!  :D

In the last ten years I've been a member or moderator at what has to be dozens of forums...Trust me, the smaller the better. I could spend a lot of time explaining my opinion on this, but it boils down to dilution. The bigger the site, the faster your post travels down the topic list and it gets difficult to get dependable responses.

After all these years, I'm a member of just two forums, this the bigger of the two....

I like the smaller forums too, I belong to a gardening site that is fairly busy but not overwhelming, it's part of a much bigger website but they have sub-forums, the one I'm on focuses on Florida gardens.

I like the tools and categories this one has and the friendliness of the members, some of the other pro forums pretty much ignore you if you're not one of the old dogs.

I belonged to a dog and cat forum for a while that only had about twenty members but it was busy as could be, good discussions and no trolls.

if that doesn't do it, the plumber forums will be next

Conspiracies and stealth raids aside, remember that a lot of forums are cyclical. I was a member of a couple of R/C aircraft forums that would just about go dead every Spring (start of flying season) and after the first cold snap (what they called the beginning of "building season") the place would light up.

We have similar factors here. When guys are busy they don't have time to chit chat, they show up more frequently if work is slow or they are between contracts. Many of us are subject to the seasons as well...Also consider the search function; There is a great wealth of information and answers to questions in our "archives" that many who know how can find without starting threads or even posting to existing ones. In other words we slow our own forum down by doing what we're here to do...Another year or so and Admin can just gather up the threads, bind them in a pretty cover and sell a painters' handbook... ;D ;)

I guess that's the difference between a discussion forum and a database....... ;)
