Fabric with acoustical properties
« on: December 01, 2009, 10:01:15 AM »
My latest job was installing some fabric from Wolf Gordon that is designed to deaden sound. This was put in a nightclub that is on the ground floor of a building filled with lofts. I hung it in the DJ booth, and surrounding the dance floor.

The walls before:

The product itself looked like a corduroy, with a raw felt backing. I double pasted the wall with HD clay, then dry hung it. Had to be careful with it, if any paste got on the front of it, it was stained. If I pushed too hard while hanging it, the paste could seep through to the face. It was tough to trim the edges to butt nicely, but the stuff was stretchy enough I could push/pull it into place if need be.

Ooooooooh! Guess who's building a recording studio and is currently researching acoustic treatment for his ceiling...

So that's direct to sheetrock then? No additional sound-deadening substrate?

How many arms/legs per sq. ft.?

And firstly, how pronounced is the acoustic affect?

A number of years back we were painting the interior of a high end home and the owner brought in a specialist to upholster the master bedroom and den walls. The fellow was a one man show and in his 70s, an amazing Guy. He had just returned from a year long gig working in Kuwaiti Palaces.
He measured the rooms, blind stitched the material into continuous bolts and made the custom beading. Stapled 1/4" thick foam sheets to the walls and then applied the upholstery material by stapling it around the woodwork. He used a hot glue gun to apply the beading around all the woodwork trim.
He did the job with no helper, huge rooms with 12 foot walls , and there was not a wrinkle or flaw in the any part of the application..  :o
I asked and he told me that he was one of only about a half dozen Guys in the US that does custom wall upholstery. ... so if anyone is looking for a sideline...  ;)

Great looking result Tim!

Great looking walls, sure would like to see the whole thing finished. I am thinking about starting to learn how to wallpaper, I have done a very small amount and every time I see your work it reminds me that there are STILL craftsmen around that take pride in their work. Well done with a tricky product.

I once helped a friend hang acoustic insulation for a recording studio, it was made out of foam and was a 3-D pyramid type shape, had to be super careful with the glue but other than that it was pretty forgiving. This stuff is much nicer looking and probably much more durable for a public venue.

Sorry Eric, I missed this. I know about ZERO knowledge on the acoustical properties of this or any other wallcovering. I'm in the "You pick it, I'll stick it" category. I have no idea how much this will deaden the sound (or not). Without trying to steer elsewhere, I would go over to ngpp.org, and ask on their forum as I know a lot of hangers surf there and someone will have a better answer than my non-answer was.

Hey! I think you have done a fabulous job. I never seen the work finishing so beautifully. I think you are the best in your field, you have changed the look of the walls completely.
