wallpaper removal
« on: May 06, 2010, 06:37:11 AM »
We are going to have wallpaper removed and I plan on just painting afterward but the walls were primed with oil based primer before the wallpaper went up. This was suggested by the wallpaperer 10 years ago.
My husband says we can not paint once the paper is down because we have oil based primer on the walls. Help I dont want to rewallpaper I just want to paint with a latex paint. Is this possible ??
Thanks in advance!

I already posted this in the painting forum but not sure if i should have posted here so I posted in both. sorry about the repeat..

Lots of threads here with this info--
Make sure you get all the glue off-  should be fairly easy on oil, then prime with a clear sealer called Gardz- will adhere to the oil well and also seal out any glue residue. Then paint with your favorite color!

I think your Husband may be confused about the "No latex over oil rule".  ;)  Acrylic latex paint CAN be used over oil based primer without any problems, however, an existing oil based finish paint should be sanded and primed before latex paint is applied... and  follow BrushJockey's  excellent advice about prepping after wallpaper...  yes you can finish with latex paint.  :)

You can definitely paint over wallpaper, The general procedure is to cut out all loose areas of paper and level the walls with wallboard compound, . Once you do all the repairs, a coat of an oil-based primer is required to seal the walls...after that u can paint with a latex paint...Try this and reply

Painting over wall paper is NEVER a good option . If it is the ONLY otion then you can, but it should always be avoided if at all possible

I agree with Chrisn. There are lots of experts on this site who have given great advice on how to remove the wallpaper and prep the walls for a great finished product. It's a lot of work but if you put in the time and don't get impatient and take shortcuts the end result is well worth your efforts. I have on occasion dealt with wallpaper that was hung directly over drywall that just would not come off. Even in this situation the paper will come loose from the drywall compound leaving what looks like an impossible fix. At this point I would agree that the only solution is to re-skim the joints back over the paper. sand, prime, and paint over the paper. By the way...........can I use Brush Jockey's signature line? ;)

Is it enough to wet a wall in order to remove the paper ?

You're very lucky! In the UK decorators hang straight onto unprimed drywall all the time, It drives me mad, no way of getting it off and what's worse is in the 80's they often put up texted papers straight on to drywall - nothing for it but to rip the drywall off and start again - customers love it when you tell them how much it's going to cost because some idiot was lazy to primer >:(

During warm weather, we could lightly mist the walls with regular water. After several applications and depending upon how many layers of paper were on the wall, a regular flat-bladed scrapper would allow you to remove the paper very quickly and easily. Wallpaper removal with old fashioned scraping will get the job done if you use the proper tool and angle.

A few years back a lady who had a house on the lake hired me to remove her wallpaper so she could paint. The paper was hung over flat paint so after soaking it and scraping it quite a bit of the paint came off as well. When I was done I called her downstairs to show her the finished product and explain what would have to be done to repair the walls so she could paint. She looked at the walls and was quite upset. She said " I thought you had a machine that would just take off the paper and leave the walls in perfect condition!" I said " No ma'am, there is no such machine." Still upset, she told me to wait right there and she would get me a check. As soon as she left the room my helper said " You know, I think that's the woman who shot that boy fishing in the cove last year." Not knowing if she was coming back with a check or a gun, we waited by the back door for her to return. She returned a few minutes later armed with a bad attitude and a check. Sometimes wallpaper removal can be quite an adventure..................proceed with caution.
