Painting plaster after wallpaper removal
« on: July 15, 2010, 06:07:25 PM »
Hello all,

New here so I'm sorry if this topic has been beat to death.  I did a few searches and really only found posts discussing drywall after wallpaper removal and not so much on Plaster walls....

Anyways, my house was built in 1963 so from what I understand it was right on the cusp of when plaster was being completely phased out.  With the help of a steamer I was able to remove the top layer of wallpaper and then sprayed on Wallwiks solution to remove the backing paper and glue.   The solution worked pretty well and was able to get most of the glue off but there was still a thin film in some places so I lightly sanded the walls to get the rest off and add a little texture in hopes that the paint will stick better.

There really aren't any major stains (some yellowing and a few water stains) but there is lot's O pencil where they wrote dimensions and snapped guide lines for the wallpaper etc.

What primer do people recommend for plaster?  I'm leaning towards Zinsser 123 but I'm wondering if even Zinsser Primecoat2 will do the trick?  I'm sure I'll end up doing two coats of paint anyways.  I foolishly bought Sherwin Williams Drywall Primer (cheapest primer they make) thinking it's got to better then some of the cheaper options at home depot but it's not covering worth a damn.

I have used Zin 123 successfully, usually 2 coats to be sure, but now I recommend a clear sealing primer called Gardz.  It will seal that glue residue and be ready for your next step in less than an hour.
If you have a bunch of spackling to do, I recommend priming all first with the gardz, and then spot priming your patches again with it after sanding.  Eliminates any possible problems with the glue.
 Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.  I saw that you had recommended Gardz in a few other posts but wasn't sure if there were any issues using it with plaster.  I will definitely pick some up as sealing any glue residue is my main concern :)

I agree with Brush, Gardz is my ONLY choice after wallpaper.. it performs as advertised, seals down the paste residue, but be aware that a little goes a long way... lay it on even but don't over load the roller ..  ;)

best luck,
