Got a real problem now. Need advice
« on: August 25, 2010, 09:55:42 PM »
In need of some good advice.  Hi.  I tried my hand at painting the doors of our new construction home without a lot of success.  So, I decided to hire a professional that was recommended by the SW down the road.  They said he was really good.  I called him and we agreed on a price for the doors and trim.  He sprayed the trim with white lacquer but did a poor job of filling the nail holes and prepping the trim.  The trim is rough, lightly covered in some places and has a lot of nail holes that were not filled.  He took all the doors off to spray them and left w/o hanging them back up.  On one door he just sprayed right over the bronze hinges.  Anyway, now I need to go back and fix it.  He is long gone and will not return any phone calls.  How do I fix this?  My plan is to sand the painted and lacquered trim, re-do the nail holes with putty, spackeling, MH??? not sure which one.  Then I guess I have to reprime and then re-paint.  Can I spot prime and spot paint the problem areas?  I am not sure what steps to take.  The trim is already painted with lacquer.  I am not sure if he even primed before he painted the trim.  I will take any suggestions.  Thanks

First, I would have a few choice words for the Guy at the "SW down the road"...  >:(

Use wood fill for the nail holes, putty may not perform well at this point. Sand the trim and the filled nail holes then spot prime them with lacquer, finish by running a complete coat (or two) of lacquer on the trim.

Best Luck,

Thanks.  I did talk to the SW reps and let them know the situation.  Two sides to every story but I have to say this was a very poor job and the guy left knowing it.    Found another door with the hinges painted.  Since then I have had three bids and they have all said they need to start from scratch to make it right.  I was wrong in the first post.  It is a lacquer undercoat but an Oil finish not a lacquer finish.  Now my question is can they spray another lacquer undercoat right on top of the oil topcoat to start over?   I am worried about the compatibility of a lacquer undercoat right on top of the semi gloss oil finish.  I know that is what two out of three plan to do.  This problem would be even worse if the new lacquer undercoat did not mesh with the oil topcoat they have on it now.  I talked to the painter I plan on using about spot priming but he said it is best to just come in and start from scratch in this situation.  Thanks for the response.
