keeping boom lift from sinking into lawn
« on: August 12, 2009, 01:11:07 PM »
Have a large job upcoming requiring a boom lift.
I am looking for tips on keeping the lift from sinking into the lawn. Timber matting, plywood etc. What have others used

I would lay down 4x8 sheets of OSB or plywood, that should stop any trenching but be aware that if it stays down for a length of time it will kill the grass....  ;)

Sorry to restart an old one, but plywood is best.  At least a half inch if not 5/8 or 3/4.  Those lifts are not light at all.  When I worked tree service we used 3/4 for our bucket truck and never had issues with sinking even on the softest ground.  OSB would work, but it's not the best choice IMO.  OSB will not bend over ground imperfections and differnces like plywood will.  Ground isn't always even, and if you're pulling into the yard from a road or driveway there may be as many as a few inches difference from the edge of the surfaces.  OSB will likely break right along the line where as plywood will just crack a little bit.  Some of the 3/4 sheets we had lasted us for 2-3 years plus.

I forgot to add that if anyone ever gets tired of carrying heavy ladders or fiver's around, try tree service for a day or two!  Carrying 4x8 sheets of 3/4 around sure sucks, not to mention the often near 100lb logs!   :o

Thank you for being so thorough in your description. I am wondering what to do at a site having loose soil. The lifters are sinking in the soil and thought of heking for the solution....
