b moore vs glidden paint?
« on: September 29, 2011, 07:33:26 AM »
Hey guys. Quick question. I work in maintenance at a hospital and do alot of painting. I have been using alot of low end paint recently and to my boss that we need to start using a better quality paint. What would you recommend? Also doing this for research. Considering doing painting on weekends and would like to use good paint for my jobs. Thanks in advance.

Between B Moore and Glidden, no choice,B Moore, Glidden is way inferior.
Also S Williams paints are good

Hold up there Chris....  :)    We used Glidden paints for over twenty years ( not what you buy in the Box stores that is a different product) and the Glidden "Diamond"  trim paint is about the best I have ever used, IMO far superior to Ben Moore or SW and I have used both of their top lines. The Dulux line is comparable to any Ben Moore wall paint ( except Aura) and as good as SW Duration wall paint in application, appearance and durability..... but you can't buy it at Walmart..  ;)

It is important to make the distinction between the glidden at HD and at an ICI store. Things are made to a price point at HD- made for contractors and what they knowledgeably expect at the real stores.

Sorry for the newbie questions guys. Just really started taking my painting seriously. Been reading up and doing my honework on paints. My only problem is is that i have noone to teach me so what i know is self taught for the most part. One more question. Is acrylic latex better than full latex and if so why? Thanks again you guys for helping me understand.

I use as much Glidden paint as I can, I think it has the best bang for the buck.

"100% acrylic latex" means that the binder in the paint is 100% acrylic binders, this is considered superior to paints that use different binders or binders that are not 100% acrylic.  "Latex" is a false term that originated during the advent of water based paints, mostly a sales/description term, there is absolutely no latex in "latex Paint"..  ;)

I actually did not know they still had ICI stores, sorry. There used to be one here maybe 15 years ago and that was all I used then myself. When they moved and then showed up at Lowes(or HD,whatever),it was not the same paint at all.Now I know ::)

In my area the ICI stores are now called Glidden Professional and all their paints have gone back to using that brand name.

ICI no longer exists since they were bought out by AkzoNobel a year or so back,  changed the name of the ICI stores to "Glidden Professional", and re-labeled / re-categorized the paint

a few thoughts
1. glidden is not bad and SW can be pricey to start just be sure that you get a price quote and watch it (everyone here has dealt with different prices at different times of the year without notice)
2. how much painting do you do does getting a "better product" really justify itself if you have to repaint alot?
3. are VOC an issues be sure to check into that most hositpals have guildlines on that if so harmony SW or eco spec BM
4. what is the price you are looking for on the paint?  and how much paint will you need most store will give you a job quote if you can promise X amount of paint to them

to me it make so sense to put money into a project that requires a lot of repainting anyway.  you will what a better paint for application sure, but be careful not to be "oversold" an any product no matter where it is.  what i would do is make a list of what you want out of the paint and take that to the store.  visit more then one place, and it some cases more the one location of the same store. also do not tell them what it is for and see what product they quote them tell them what it is.  You will find this interesting
hope this helps
