Painting scratched wood doors
« on: October 23, 2016, 05:56:48 AM »
Hello, new here.  I am interested in advice on how to prep some wood doors before painting.  These are french doors to the outside, wood, painted white.  My dogs have scratched the doors up over the years and essentially removed a layer of paint with their scratching.  I wasn't sure if this should be sanded first or some sort of filler before painting?  Thanks for the input.

If you don't mind the indentations, then just lightly sand and paint it.

Thanks for the response.  What if I do want to get rid of the indentations?

welcome you could also use wood bondo and then block sand it...good luck
I don't do this for a hobby and I'm damn sure I don't need the practice

Thanks, I have some spackling so I could use that.  Is wood filler better for this application?  I also have some trim with grooves in it which will need to be filled in, so I suppose I would use wood filler in that case too.  I was also under the impression that spackling would be used around top edge of shower where paint is peeling?

thanks

at the shower, peeling paint and actual drywall repair are 2 different things so unless there are actual repairs, i would just remove loose paint, prime, recaulk and paint.... and clarifying the door work, although the soft spackle will somewhat harden when the new paint absorbs into the patch, I would look at using a 2 component bondo on the large flat area and the spackle on the trim if it is ornate with routed grooves and radius's  with as it is a bit easier to sand down to match the existing trim...good luck
