Primer Woes
« on: May 20, 2005, 04:26:59 PM »
I thought I'd repaint the kids' bathroom today.  As the existing paint is a dark terracotta with a sheen, I used Kilz Primer, (white general purpose.)  Despite trying to apply it evenly with a quality roller cover, (Purdey White Dove) and an expensive Purdy cut in brush, I have spent almost all day trying to get an even coat on the walls.  It just doesn't seem to be covering evenly >:(  Any ideas where I'm going wrong?  Will I need to reapply a second coat to get the even coverage the instructions say you need or can I just paint over the uneven primer finish?

Thanks!

Hi Elaine,

It is not really important that the primer "look" even, so long as all the surface is covered. Primer does not have a lot of "hiding" power, it's purpose is to bond and seal the surface.
Allow the primer to dry, sand lightly (120 grit) just to knock off imperfections and smooth down the surface. Apply two coats of Acrylic finish paint in the sheen of your choice.

Hope this helps,
