Aluminum siding
« on: August 15, 2006, 09:00:52 PM »
I'm getting ready to paint an aluminum siding house. I havn't looked at it yet but I'm sure the siding is old.

Can somebody walk me through the steps. I've done a lot of painting for myself but never al siding. Here's what I think I know:

  1. Siding must be pressure washed to remove grime and chalked paint.
  2. Adhesion enhancing agent must be added to first coat
  3. Brushes and rollers are to be avoided using a sprayer instead.
  4. Latex is preferred paint to use.

Thanks,

Dave

Hey Dave

Ask your paint supplier for an aluminum compatible paint. The last aluminum house I did was backrolled and turned out fine.

Good luck

Now that I think about it, Dave, I don't remember having used any specialized coating for topcoat. Just a standard ICI or Sure-Billy exterior paint...

Eric what is back rolling. I've done plenty of roller work, is that the same thing.

Also,  what is ICI and I've not heard of Sure-Billy paint.

Thanks,

Dave

David,

I can't speak for Eric but we do speak the same language...  ;)

Back rolling if usually a two man operation, one to spray the other to even out the finish with a roller. The roller will get any swags or thin spots left by the spray man.
ICI is the parent company for Glidden and many more paint "Brands"

Sure Billy is painter's slang for the Sherwin Williams paint co..

BTW... Once you get the siding clean you can use 100% acrylic latex ( exterior ) on the alumn. A primer is an option but is not a necessity for this application.

Best of Luck

As the others have said, a primer is not needed. Just powerwash using a dedicated siding cleaner. I'd use Duration Satin by SW.
