Title: Painting over semi gloss
Post by: Janice Patterson on October 28, 2017, 09:03:45 PM
Hi all.  The plan is to paint everything in the basement.  Trims and doors in a semi gloss white, ceilings in a flat white and walls in a grey eggshell.  I painted the crown and trim in semi gloss.  Then I painted two coats of matt white on the ceiling (final color) and one coat flat white on walls (as a primer).  My problems is that I painted 'outside of the lines' with the semi gloss onto the ceiling and wall.  Now the matte paint won't stick to those areas....leaving a halo of sorts above and below the crown.  What do I need to do to fix this?  Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Two coat should cover the tiny bit of semi gloss without doing anything. You say you put matte on the ceiling and flat on the walls? Should have been the other way around.

Chrisn,
Thanks for your reply.   I have eggshell on the walls and a "matte" on the ceiling.  The "flat" that I referred to is a primer.  I live in Jordan and flat is not available here.  I often mistakenly interchange the words and the guys at the paint store always look at me funny when I do...as they have never heard of flat.  I panicked about the semi gloss and went ahead and got some liquid deglosser and scrubbed above and below the crown with a toothbrush.  I did do a few test spots first to see if (1) if the line would show through two coats of 'color' (2) to try Kilz Original primer to see if the paint would bond to that (3) how difficult and messy the deglosser would be.  If the lines were small, the two coats covered it okay, but on the wider lines it didn't.  The Kilz didn't do anything...maybe their bonding primer would have, but I had the Original on hand.  The deglosser was a task especially in the two rooms I had already primed but in the other rooms, it was easier.   I'm almost done with the deglossing and will get to the first coat of finish day after tomorrow.  Thanks again for your reply.
