Title: Seams on Cathedral Ceilings
Post by: AttentiontoDetail on November 17, 2006, 11:00:13 PM
Does anyone have a technique to stop the seams from reappearing on a cathedral ceiling?  Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you referring to the tape joints in a sheetrock ceiling? If so, how are they reappearing? Are the joints sunken, pronounced, or coming loose? Or perhaps stains are bleeding through?

...As a painter there isn't a lot that can be done for poor drywall work other than to apply the most forgiving flat paint possible and pray...If you have drywall experience you can attempt to rectify the matter by refilling (sunken), building out (for visible humps/joints that were neglected in the sanding phase--A curved trowel sometimes works great in these situations), or, if it's slight, a retexturing...If the ceiling is smoothwall, good luck to you, especially with a revealing light source, every flaw is exaggerated and you're looking at some sleepless nights...

...Now if you're NOT talking about drywall tape edges, then...nevermind... :)

Vaulted ceilings can cause real problem with tape joints. In most cases the drywall is attached directly to the underside of the (pitched) rafters, there is no allowance for the expansion and contraction of the roof system. The drywall tape joints often crack or buckle under the stress. There are new building methods that help with the problem, but with an existing structure all you can do is repair the joint with fiber mesh tape and hope for the best...  ;)

Best Luck

I worked a new housing project last winter, one of the things they had me do is retape those joints since the drywall guys did such a poor jobs. Some just needed sanding and retexturing some I had to cutout completely and retape and float then texture IT WAS A PAIN IN THE NECK, LITERALLY
