Title: Painting the shed
Post by: NeverWantedToLearnThis on August 31, 2017, 07:05:01 PM
So, my husband has had severe back trouble for a number of years. He is not able to do the things he used to do, but some of our outbuildings are in desperate need of paint. I paid someone to paint the house last year, but can't pay for the outbuildings. I never wanted to learn to do this kind of stuff, but I guess now is the time. I am trying to see this as a growing a learning opportunity.

I have tightened the screws in the batten boards and nailed places that needed it. (Only one in three of my hammer strokes hits the nail...but I'll get better.) I have taken the wire brush to the south (worst condition-photo attached) side and west side. It looks worse than ever! (To be expected, I'm sure.) I know that I will need to hose off all the surfaces before getting to the painting.

Can I use a latex primer? Can the primer be tinted? Should I paint everything with the same color primer, and then paint the trim work the different color? Is it easier to paint the trim work first or last? What other things do I need to think about? How can I measure to estimate how much paint I need, thus also estimating cost?  I've never done anything like this before and need all the suggestions I can get. I'm 66, so it may take me weeks, but that's OK. I recently retired and have the time.

Thanks in advance.
