best low or no VOC primer?
« on: July 22, 2010, 04:35:20 PM »
Hi,

I'm looking for a low or no VOC primer for drywall, and I was wondering if you could please recommend one.

Thank you :)

EPA regulations allow more VOC in primers than paints, at least for now..  ;) but many paint companies are hitting the market with low and zero VOC water based primers. Zinsser has a very good track record when it comes to primer performance, take a look at this one.

Best luck,

Commercial grade: Benjamin Moore's Eco Spec Waterborne Zero VOC primer, product code N372-00
Premium grade: Benjamin Moore's NATURA Zero VOC primer, product code 511-00.
Both primers are zero VOC, but the Eco-Spec is low odor, while the Natura is zero odor.
Most manufacturers have zero VOC paints and primers when it is untinted. When you add Glycol colorant to make your desired color, the zero VOC goes out the window. Benjamin Moore is the only manufacturer which has the GENNEX colorant system which allows you to get the deepest, darkest, richest colors and still be zero VOC.
Hope this helps.
Vandi.

Vandi makes a good point but most primers do not require tinting, IMO primer (color) fullness is not the most important property of primers, adhesion and sealing are..  ;)
